Getty Load of This: Woolworths

Welcome to Getty Load of This, a blog series where we pay homage to old-school PR stunts, signings and appearances. There are some crackers lurking on Getty, so let’s kick-off part one with…

Woolworths!

September 1998

Getty says: “'Titanic' fans Claire Barrowclough, 24, and Linzi Ball, 18, are first in the line at the Victoria Lane branch of Woolworths when it opened at midnight for the film's release on video. Between them, the pair have seen the film 17 times.”

WXY says: “Ahhh, that time when midnight queuing was commonplace. Lot of questions for Claire and Linzi: What are they up to now? Still stan Titanic? Crucially, was there room for two on that door?”

October 2001

Getty says: “Steps' Book Signing At Woolworths Shop On Edgware Road, London, Britain.”

WXY says: “This happened more than 20 years ago - let that sink in. Also, Steps had a book? Looks like their Greatest Hits to us, Getty. Let’s focus on Lisa for a minute. Look how happy she is. She f*cking LOVES being a pop star.”

January 2006

Getty says: “Glamour model Jordan, real name Katie Price, meets fans and signs copies of her new DVD The Jordan Workout at Woolworths, Lakeside Shopping Centre on January 5, 2006 in Grays, England. The DVD demonstrates how she lost excess pounds for her wedding to Peter Andre, following the birth of her second son, Junior.”

WXY says: “The ultimate businesswoman of the 2000s. There was nothing Pricey wasn’t flogging back in the day that we didn’t happily lap up. Bonus points for leg warmers over pointy shoes too. Truly priceless. An icon.”

March 2007

Getty says: “'X Factor' finalist Ray Quinn attends an instore signing as part of a one-day tour of the UK to promote his eponymously titled debut album, released today, at Woolworths on March 12, 2007 in Liverpool, England.”

WXY says: “Woolworths was made for reality TV stars. Look how happy those people are to see Ray show off his Burton’s three-piece and bang out a Rat Pack classic. What’s he stood on though?”
